TYPES OF AVALANCHES

TYPES OF AVALANCHES

DRY (POWDER) AVALANCHE- these are extremely violent and seize up like concrete when they come to a stop. In front of the powder is an air blast which is strong enough to explode your lungs.
DRY SLAB AVALANCHE- main cause of deaths in the case of avalanches. This is caused when a plate of snow suddenly slides away. Typically it is about half the size of a football field.

ICE & CORNICE FALL AVALANCHE- occurs when overhanging ice and snow breaks off. Ilants the equivalent of a waterfall just with regards to ice. They can be large and travel long distances. Cornices are elegant snow structures formed by wind drifting snow onto the downwind side of an obstacle. These avalanches cause less death.
LOOSE SNOW AVALANCHE- this is basically loose snow sliding down a mountain.
WET AVALANCHE- a flow of snow, ice, rock, and other materials that occurs as a result of thawing. They normally occur at the end of or late period of the snow season.

TYPES OF TYPHOONS

Typhoons are also known as cyclones. The name change depends on the area of the world you come from.

TYPES OF SNOW STORMS

TYPES OF SNOW STORMS

SNOW FLURRIES-light snow falling for short periods.
SNOW SHOWERS-snow falling a a somewhat intense level over brief periods of time.
SNOW SQUALLS-brief but intense snow showers accompanied by high winds.
BLOWING SNOW-considered a dangerous winter hazard.High winds can blow snow through the atmosphere and can decrease visibility.
 NOR'EASTER-low pressure snow storm.
BLIZZARDS- the most hazardous of winter storms. There is extremely high winds where visibility is gone completely and it is encouraged to remain indoors.
ICE STORMS-another dangerous winter storm. Usually blamed for deaths that occur within that period.
SLEET- raindrops freeze into ice pellets before reaching the ground. Weight of this on power lines can be dangerous.

TYPES OF DROUGHTS

TYPES OF DROUGHTS

METEOROLOGICAL DROUGHT- this type of drought is defined, basically by comparing the level of dryness to a 'normal' amount of dryness in the soil; and how long the dryness last. Maybe considered as regional. It is identified by periods of droughts on the basis of the number of days in which the precipitation is less. (precipitation- the quantity of water that falls to the earth).
AGRICULTURAL DROUGHT- this drought deals with the moisture of the soil and if it is sufficient enough to promote growth of crops at every level of development. Agricultural droughts are linked to some characteristics of both meteorological and hydrological droughts.
HYDROLOGICAL DROUGHTS- this type of drought deals with the effects of periods of precipitation on the surface or subsurface water supply, like reservoirs). Precipitation deficiency takes a long period to show up.
SOCIOECONOMIC DROUGHTS-"the supply of many economic goods like water, food grains and fish, all depends on the weather. Because of the natural variability of the climate, water supply is ample in some years, while in others is unable to support human needs. Therefore, socioeconomic droughts occur when the demand  for an economic good exceeds supply as a result of a weather-related shortfall in water supply."

TYPES OF LANDSLIDES

TYPES OF LANDSLIDES

  1. FALLS- starts with the detachment of rock or soil masses from steep slopes. The rock or soil falls.
  2. TOPPLES- this is a forward rotation, out of a slope, of rock mass or soil mass.
  3. SLIDES- this is a down-slope movement of rock mass and/or soil masses that occur on the surface of thin areas with intense strain.
  4. FLOWS- spatially continuous movement in which the surfaces are not preserved during and after the event.
  5. SPREADS-is an extension of a cohesive rock or soil mass combined with other materials (softer underlying materials).
