TYPES OF VOLCANOES

DIFFERENT TYPES OF VOLCANOES

SHIELD VOLCANO-  these are broad, domed-shaped volcanoes with long, gently sloped sides. It resembles a warrior's shield, hence the name. They are tall and the eruptions are not as harsh as the other volcanoes.

COMPOSITE VOLCANOES- these are cone shaped volcanoes of layers of lava, ash and rock. These volcanoes erupt in an explosive manner. Example; Mount Vesuvius that buried ancient Pompeii.

CALDERA VOLCANOES- a cauldron-like volcano that is formed by the collapse of land, after a volcanic eruption. It's eruption can be very dangerous and destructive as gases are trapped at high pressure within the magma. When the magma comes to the surface, this causes the gases to release pressure and explode. Magma and volcanic ash spreads over wide areas.
