TYPES OF TSUNAMIS

DISTANT TSUNAMI- these originate from a distant source and is caused by a major earthquake. It is similar to the local tsunami but it consists of multiple waves.

 LOCAL TSUNAMI-this type of tsunami is usually caused by an earthquake, but can also be caused by landslides or volcanic eruption. The source is nearby and the effects are confined to the coastal area.

 REGIONAL TSUNAMI-this is a type of tsunami that can cause destruction in a particular region and has little effects outside the region.

TECTONIC EARTHQUAKE- this types of quake is caused when strains in rocks masses are increased to a point where it is stronger than the strength of the rock masses. As a result, breakages takes place as the rocks are flung in the opposite directions.

 VOLCANIC EARTHQUAKE- this is associated with volcanic activities. This quake results from a slip of rock mass near a volcano, which may be in part due to the heat of the magma.

 COLLAPSE EARTHQUAKE- these are small quakes in the underground areas like a mine that could be caused by seismic waves from exploding rocks on the surface.

SHIELD VOLCANO-  these are broad, domed-shaped volcanoes with long, gently sloped sides. It resembles a warrior's shield, hence the name.They are tall and the eruptions are not as harsh as the other volcanoes.

COMPOSITE VOLCANOES- these are cone shaped volcanoes of layers of lava, ash and rock. These volcanoes erupt in an explosive manner. Example; Mount Vesuvius that buried ancient Pompeii.

RIVERINE FLOODS- basically, this refers to river floods. When a river reaches floodstage water can rise and spill over the banks. The amount of flooding is dependent on the amount of rainfall, the saturation of the soil and the land around the river.

COASTAL FLOODS- occurs along the edges of oceans, and is driven mostly by storm surges and wave changes. 

URBAN FLOODS- this type of flood occurs in densely populated areas and is caused mainly when drainage systems are overwhelmed by heavy rainfalls.
